Book Review

by Gabrielle Zevin
Reviewed by Melanie Green
Charming, delightful, sweet, insightful and utterly page-turning describe Gabrielle Zevin's "The Storied Life of AJ Fikry." Maybe it's because Zevin totally shatters the myth about the life of a bookseller being that of lazy, idyllic days spent meandering the stacks of your own personal collection of tomes to select whichever literary gem you'll entertain yourself with while you while away the afternoon, eternally warming your hands around a steaming cup of tea. Pphhshaw! Or maybe it's the literary references that open each chapter in the form of a book review our beloved AJ has written for his precocious and growing-up-too-fast daughter, reminding her why they read that particular book and what it meant when they did. Oh be still my bookish heart! A great book that references more great books! Or maybe it's just that Zevin has crafted a story so well written that I forgot I how well she had captured the inner-workings of my industry and I just gave myself over to the story.

The story is this: AJ's life is disintegrating. His dream of owning a quaint, cape-town bookshop with his wife and raising a whole brood of book nerds in the apartment above is shattered when his wife dies tragically. The shop flounders and AJ spirals deeper and deeper into depression. And then one night, a mysterious gift appears in his shop. Someone leaves AJ a baby girl. And so begins AJ's storied life. He decides to keep that sweet baby girl and raise her as his daughter. Of course, questions remain about his daughter's identity and who left her with AJ. There's quirky characters, the tough cop who's never been bitten by the book bug who becomes so well-read he's leading book clubs in the store. And there's plot twists and romance and hilarious author events and mistaken identities.

If you've ever thought you'd love to own a bookstore so you could sit around all day and read, or if you wonder how any independent bookstores are still around, or if you crave to understand how the publishing and bookselling industry works, this might be a good choice for you. But if you want an unexpected, quirky, funny, mysterious and totally charming read, this one is definitely for you.
