Book Review

A haunting tale by a Pulitzer-Prize winning writer, Lila is breathtaking. Both the title character, a beautiful but feral, naïve but haunted woman rescued from an unimaginable life and her story. Lila’s story takes place in Gilead, Iowa, where she struggles to understand and accept the love and compassion that have encompassed her even though she is surrounded by crushing immorality.

Ash Thompson, dubbed “Gallant Ash,” is the toughest, strongest, meanest, most badass soldier in the South. And she is a woman. Ash, whose real name is Constance, leaves her devoted husband and successful farm to don the Union uniform and fight for the South. It is the bloodiest battle in history and Constance is right in the middle of it. As she journeys forward through war, oppression, poverty, hysteria and mayhem, her backstory is gorgeously revealed. Her character is sensitive and tender beyond the heroics. Among the battles Constance – “Ash” -  wins is the one for a permanent place in my heart.
